Don’t Panic!  Test Anxiety/Stress Management

Keep Calm and Manage Your Stress**

Stress and anxiety are often synonymous with taking exams.  Some anxiety can aid performance, but too much can interfere.  Learn tools you can utilize to help you; we will review related study skills strategies and direct calming techniques which can be applied while taking tests.  It’s never too early, or too late, to practice these tried and true methods for stress management—be ready for whatever comes your way this semester!  Each workshop is run with different ideas, different strategies!

Test Shmest:  Learning the Skills to Make THAT Test a Piece of Cake!

What would it take to do better on your tests? Good test preparation includes organization, correcting habits that don’t work. Identify your strengths and create personalized test-taking strategies that are specific to you.

Style to Tone: What Is the Connection, How Does One Control It, and Why It Is Paramount

Come to one of our most popular workshop presenter! This session will explore the ways that style in the process of writing creates tone in the reading of the resulting discourse.  To define: style centers on what the writer does; tone centers on how a given reader or audience responds.  Only the latter matters, ultimately, in whether a writer “wins the day”–whether that winning means getting an A in a college course, landing a job interview, or, more simply, getting along with others.  The questions surrounding this connection are not easy to formulate, much less to answer, but we shall do our best in getting our brains around what Jonathan Swift called, famously, “proper words in proper places.”

Sharpening Your Study Skills!

What are the Main Components of Excellent Study Skills?  10 ‘must-have’ skills to excel in your studies.  Strengthen what you do well; Identify the areas to improve upon for your success.

5 Most Excellent Strategies to Study for Science Midterms and Finals

This is a very special presentation for anyone taking a science—especially General Chemistry, EBIO, Physics.  Come to hear about useful tips for continued success in these courses.  Bring your questions about YOUR study skills; you will learn effective, efficient and practical, ‘do-able’ skills that you can put into immediate use.  It might be easier to improve upon your academic performance than you think!!!

Time Management for Finals!

For the next few weeks, taking extra care to manage your time and effort will make positive effect on your performance for finals, finishing projects, and getting it all done!  Come in and we will set up plans, prioritize, and in general help you organize your final last weeks of the semester.  Bring your syllabi to ensure we get it all!

Yoga for EveryStudent

This special workshop will teach you valuable breathing (pranayama) and simple yoga poses proven to reduce stress.  No special equipment needed (bring your yoga mat, if desired for C4C.  We have a few mats for those who RSVP to the Fleming Workshops).  Dress in relaxed clothing that is easy to sit in.  Simple moves that you can integrate immediately into your life!  Presented by A Yoga Alliance Certified Teacher.

WALK IN STUDY SKILLS HELP

Need help in any academic study area but can’t make it to the workshops offered?  Bring in your question(s) and we will help you identify what you can do to improve your academic skills!  Attending one of the workshops listed above can be extremely beneficial – students share helpful hints and experiences!  If those don’t work in your schedule, c’mon in!  First come, first served!

It’s Complicated! Making Sense of Textbooks

Feel that you have too much to read?  Confused about how to start, how to approach complex reading material?  We will show you the most tried and true method for getting through the reading, and best of all—Remembering what you have read!!! That’s right: this presentation is essential to anyone who wants to ensure consistent, successful results in courses involving–and being tested on—textbook and readings.

What would it take to do better on your tests? Good test preparation includes organization, correcting habits that don’t work. Identify your strengths and create personalized test-taking strategies that are specific to you.

Highlighted Workshop: Sentences: How Words Make Meaning in Writing

“Simple,” “compound,” “complex,” “compound-complex”: some of the terms might be familiar, but few people truly understand–and, therefore, can control–how sentences work to create meaning.  This session will explore the seemingly simple linguistic unit that is the sentence, and participants should leave with a better sense of how syntax (word order), semantics (word meaning), and grammar (word “glue”) combine and can be finessed through a single principle…but you will have to attend the session to learn what is that principle!  At any rate, to understand sentences, I shall argue in a view that might seem exaggerated, changes how one understands language; to change how one understands language is to change one’s academic destiny.

Study Skills for the Sciences

This is a very special presentation for anyone taking a science—especially General Chemistry, EBIO, Physics.  Come to hear what a current Senior/Tutor give useful tips for continued success in these courses.  Bring your questions about YOUR study skills; You will learn effective, efficient and practical, ‘do-able’ skills that you can put into immediate use.  It might be easier to improve upon your academic performance than you think!!!

Chess and Punctuation: The “Moves” to the Game

Learning “the moves” of chess and learning those of punctuation are very similar: it takes only about fifteen minutes to get the hang of either…but a lifetime to master the sequences.  This one-hour tutorial will explore a fun analogy between the two “games.”  First, we will review the moves; then, we shall consider how the moves are part of the larger sequences and purposes.  For instance, the king in chess may be taken as similar to the period in punctuation–that is, the point of the game but, largely, uninteresting to meaning-making.  If nothing else, you should come out of this tutorial with a better sense of both games! (Note: no prior knowledge of chess is necessary to enjoy this workshop!)

Time Management for Superheroes!

For those of us who cannot stop, bend, or make an hour last longer, this workshop is for you.  If you are a procrastinator but tired of pulling all-nighters,  Learn the basic skills to succeed, how to plan out your academics for your academic advantage!

The Ways of Note-Taking

Learn tried and true methods for taking notes.  But, we don’t stop there!  Learn how to best use your notes to improve your understanding of the course material. And earn better grades!

Learning How to Learn:  Exploring your Learning Style

Study tips personalized for you!  Your personal learning style will make a difference in how you enjoy, study and retain information.  Identify your academic learning style, and strategies most effective for you

Don’t Panic!  Test Anxiety/Stress Management:

Stress and anxiety are often synonymous with taking exams.  Some anxiety can aid performance, but too much can interfere.  Learn tools you can utilize to help you; we will review related study skills strategies and direct calming techniques which can be applied while taking tests.  It’s never too early, or too late, to practice these tried and true methods for stress management—be ready for whatever comes your way this semester!
