In 2011, Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin threw down the gauntlet. Collective bargaining rights for unions across the state were slashed to next to nothing and $800 million in education funding was cut from the budget. At the root of the debate: the right to gather and bargain for the rights of public employees, including teachers, an issue that is all too familiar to American history or American theatre.
Inspired by the these current events, the Department of Theatre and Dance is mounting Clifford Odets’ Waiting for Lefty this Fall. Oppression, poverty and the struggle for equal rights frame each of the vignettes that make up this soul-stirring production.
