Our deepest condolences from the Dept of Ethnic Studies on behalf of a beloved student leader

It is with deep regret and sadness, that the Department of Ethnic Studies officially acknowledges the passing of Ikenna “Kenna” Egbune, who was known and loved by many as a passionate, luminous being and ardent leader / advocate of justice and empowerment… and as a compassionate, caring friend.  He has touched so many lives here in the department and will always be remembered.

We would like to send our profound condolences to his loved ones, family, and friends.

The Ethnic Studies conference room (Ketchum 24) is open today for those who wish to gather, sit, and remember together.

Tonight at 8:00pm, a candlelight vigil will be held west of the Norlin Library / Quad (front steps).

Please be sure to take care of each other and yourselves.

Hmong Awareness Week Event Series – Mon 10/1 – Fri. 10/5th

Hmong Student Association of Colorado and Cultural Events Board hosts its very first Hmong Awareness Week (HAW) at the University of Colorado at Boulder on the first week of October. This week will be composed of a 3-day event series. The purpose of this event is to educate and create awareness among the general public about Hmong history, people and culture. Details are below!

Monday, October 1, 2012:
Monday Oct. 1st, 2012 at 6:00pm in Humanities 250; HSAC collaborates with producer and film director Rob Gosbee to screen the film Secret Wars. This documentary captures and retells the stories of many Hmong veterans who aided in the US effort during the Vietnam War. We start HAW with a historical overview of Hmong history.

Wednesday, October 3, 2012:
Wednesday Oct. 3rd, 2012 at 6:00pm in Hellems 201; HSAC student members lead presentations on different aspects of the Hmong culture such as Paj Ntaub/Hmong clothing, Tuj lub/Top spin and different ways of Hmong courtship.

Friday, October 5, 2012:

Friday Oct. 5th, 2012 at 6:00pm in Hellems 201; Professor Dr. Pao Lee Vue flies in from Rochester NY, to lead a round table discussion on Hmong representation in media. This event is a political component to HAW. Dr. Vue will touch base on his research projects, Gran Torino and other media that represents Hmong people in specific ways. We hope that people will participate and ask one another questions about how these media portrayals of Hmong people affect Hmong identity and culture. How do these representations shift our way of understanding one another and the very meaning of what it means to be Hmong?

Grad School? Peace Corps? Why Not Both? Peace Corps Masters International Info Session – Mon. 10/1 6pm

Thinking about Peace Corps?  What about Grad School?  Why not BOTH?

Master’s International (MI) offers the unique opportunity to integrate a master’s degree with overseas service in a variety of fields at more than 80 academic institutions nationwide.  Established in 1987, MI produces Peace Corps Volunteers with additional education and skills to serve overseas – and helps you earn your advanced degree along the way.  As an MI student, you have an unparalleled opportunity to live and work overseas while completing a master’s degree in your field of interest.  The benefits of the MI program can last a lifetime.

Many of our partner schools offer research or teaching assistantships, scholarships, or tuition waivers to Volunteers while serving in the Peace Corps – and all offer credit for service. The schools also dedicate talented faculty and staff members, who serve as ongoing resources throughout your academic and overseas experiences.

Some other benefits include:

  • Language, cross-cultural, and technical training
  • Transportation costs to and from the country of service
  • Living and housing expenses during overseas service
  • Medical and dental coverage
  • Deferment and possible cancellation of certain government education loans
  • Readjustment allowance upon completion of service
  • Career counseling and job search facilities

CU-Boulder has four MI programs in the fields of Geography, Education, Environmental Studies, and Business Administration.
