Maurice Kenny (Mohawk) is an American Indian Two-Spirit poet and author of The Mama
Poems, Tortured Skins and Other Fictions, Dancing Back Strong the Nation, Blackrobe: Isaac
Jogues, Carving Hawk, and numerous others. He is the recipient of the American Book Award,
Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Wordcraft Circle
of Native Writers Elder Recognition Award. Kenny’s work has been published in almost 100
journals, and he has held residencies at a number of colleges and universities, including UC
Berkeley, the American Indian Community House in NYC, the Oneida Indian Nation of
Wisconsin, University of Oklahoma at Norman, the En’owkin Center at the University of
Victoria, St. Lawrence University, and Syracuse Community Writers.
