Pi Lambda Chi, Sigma Lambda Gamma, Lambda Theta Nu, and UMAS y MEChA would like to invite to the 25th Annual Semana de la Xicana
A little background….In 1989, a group of womyn within M.E.Ch.A. started Semana de la Xicana. They recognized the need to address issues of la mujer in the Chicana/o community. It is now an annual event dedicated to celeberating Chicana identity and herstory.
Que Viva La Mujer!
(Tiahui: Nahuatl for “always moving forward”)
This year we would like to emphasize the power that the arts have politically and how these different styles of arts give Xicanas a strong voice.
Join us in this year’s series of events:
Mirame- March 11, 2014
This event will focus on the visual arts that express what our words cannot. We will be hosting live art exhibitions as well as creating a community mural. Come learn about Xicana art and history, as well as be a part of creating a communal piece.
Escúchame- March 12, 2014
We will be hosting New York City performer Yadira de la RIva, as she takes us through her journey growing up living within two countries and two cultures.
Explicate- March 13, 2014
Join us in a night of spoken word. Come listen to a few great local artists from Café Cultura and fellow students tell us their stories through beautiful spoken word!
